I found something really interesting on the way home from work near the bus stop. It’s in the picture below and I tried to pick it up and chew it but my mum took it off me.

Mum said she feels a new series coming on, odd things that I pick up to chew when walking along. she often doesn’t notice when I pick things up if I’m quick I can’t get them out of my mouth I guess the moral of the story is to the public don’t throw things on the footpath put them in a rubbish bin.

“Good/Nice” Dog:

Mum and I were on the bus. I was tucked under the seat with my feet within the priority seating area and out of the aisle.

Several people were getting on the bus early on a Sunday morning. One passenger said to my mum, “good dog“, another said “nice dog“.

Both of the people who acknowledged me then stood on my paws because they were avoiding other passengers who were sitting half in the aisle to have a conversation with some people sitting behind them.

Interestingly, there were plenty of empty seats, including right next to the person sitting in the aisle and the driver pulled away before one of the passengers had passed entirely.

It would be fantastic if people could be aware of their surroundings and actions and the impact that these can have on others. For example, leaning into the aisle to chat with a friend and a driver pulling away from the curb before a passenger sat caused other passengers to be off balance when passing a service dog and tread on them (even when they were tucked and well out of the aisle). An injured service dog can have a substantial negative impact on the life of their handler and could also impact their working life.

I’m lucky to say that my paws were not permanently injured by both of the people who stood on them and I could continue my day. However, a little consideration of others would have meant that I wouldn't have been stood on and the risk of injury would be decreased.

I love it when another guide dog team texts my mum at work asking if she wants a break and they are at the library. Mum had been battling with a headache and low BP all day and was pleased for the brief distraction.

I was able to catch up with my buddy GD Yale who came back to visit and drank all my water, chewed both my bones and stole my bed and with the other toys, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

It is the second time since May 2022 that my mum has had to get out her Guide Dog ID card, which has the regulations and legislation around service dog entry to public places printed on the back.

We visited a restaurant we had been to twice before with no problems this weekend with another Guide Dog team. The restaurant refused us entry because we had dogs.

We explained both the dogs were Guide Dogs and we were allowed into public places, but we were initially still refused until we produced the written regulations on the back of Mum‘s ID card.

Sadly this isn’t uncommon, and just dependent on the knowledge of the staff working on any one-day. This story again illustrates why the normalisation of disability within society is such an important construct. Education about and exposure to people living with disability as a normal part of our community is important to everyone in our society (children and adults alike). Please do not shy away from both education and exposure.

Come on, everybody, let’s make our community more inclusive and less disabling.
